Herb was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on October 6, 1928 to Alfred and Bertha Grossmann.
The family moved several times during his childhood to St. Paul, Inver Grove, Mankato, Eau Claire, South St. Paul, West St. Paul, and Minneapolis. Herb was active in sports and was on his High School track and football teams. He graduated from South St. Paul High School in 1946. He met Joan and on October 14, 1950 they were married at Salem Lutheran Church in West St. Paul. They built a home in Eagan and began raising a family.
Herb worked for Morton Sausage Co., was a route driver for Zinsmaster Baking Company, became a life underwriter for Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance. He was Chisago Lake Township Clerk, and a tax preparer, and all the while enjoyed farming.
In 1961, Herb and Joan moved to the farm in Lindstrom where they continued to raise their family. He was an active member in his church and was a 4-H leader.
In 1998, Herb had a stroke which left him wheelchair bound for the remainder of his life. He was courageous in his battle to live and his strong will gave him the purpose to face each new day with the loving support of his wife and family.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by wife of 61 years, Joan; sons James (Cathy), Steven (Donna), Douglas (Kathy), and David (Kim); daughter Debra (Wayne) Anderson; 14 Grandchildren; 15 Great-Grandchildren; sisters Norma Gerjets and Marlene Jensen; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials: Memorials suggested to Chisago Lake Lutheran Church.
Visitation: Visitation 4 to 7 PM Sunday, June 10th at the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom.
Service: Funeral service 11 AM Monday, June 11th at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City.
